Overview

This workshop is targeted at new users of the University's High Performance Computing "Zaratan" cluster, especially those with limited or no HPC experience experience.
In order to allow for sufficient time to access the cluster and to test the presented material, in particular job submission, we offer two sessions of this workshop:
Session 1: using command-line interface (unix/linux shell)   (July 29, 2025)
Session 2: using the OpenOnDemand web portal   (August 5, 2025)

Both workshop sessions introduce participants to the basics of high-performance computing (HPC) at UMD, covering:

In Session 1 (7/29/25) we will access the cluster using ssh (and PuTTY) and use a terminal (Unix/Linux shell) to work on the cluster.
In Session 2 (8/5/25) we will use the OpenOnDemand web portal (portal.zaratan.umd.edu) to access and work on the cluster.

The OpenOnDemand web portal offers unexperienced users an efficient way to accomplish most practical tasks. Using a Unix shell interactively or running shell scripts allows for using the full breath of the Linux/Unix operating system. Several worked-out examples will be presented, these can be used as templates for similar projects.

Prerequisites

None. This is an introductory workshop and is targeted at new users of our clusters, so no previous knowledge of high performance computing nor Linux/Unix is assumed.

System Requirements

This is a bring-your-own-laptop event. Make sure that a terminal application (e.g. ssh or PuTTY) and UMD's GlobalProtect VPN is installed. A modern web browser (on Windows preferably Firefox) is required for use of the web portal.

NOTE: DIT reserves the right to cancel the workshop for any reason with little notice.
