Overview

This workshop is targeted at new users of the University's High Performance Computing resources (Zaratan and Juggernaut clusters), especially those with limited or no HPC experience. This course will introduce participants to the basics of high-performance computing (HPC), and will briefly cover:

  • general HPC concepts, terminology, etc.
  • accessing the cluster
  • accessing software installed on the cluster
  • transferring files
  • submitting jobs on the cluster

Much of the above tasks will be discussed in terms of the recently added OnDemand web portal for the cluster.
The OnDemand web portal offers unexperienced users an efficient way to accomplish most practical tasks

Prerequisites

None. This is an introductory workshop and is targetted at new users of our clusters, so no previous knowledge of high performance computing is assumed.

System Requirements

The classroom provides 50 seats. This is a bring-your-own-laptop event. Make sure that a terminal application (e.g. ssh or PuTTY) is installed. A modern web browser -- for Windows preferably Firefox -- is required for use of the OnDemand web portal.
