Our HPC community
HPC Community at UMD
The UMD HPC community consists of the following groups with a diverse background in research and technical interests within the university. We assist each other in ongoing collaboration of using the HPC cluster as a research tool.
- Graduate and undergraduate students
- Faculty members, postdocs and other researchers
- Allocations and Advisory Committee
- HPC systems engineers
Participate in HPC conferences
The UMD HPC systems team regularly participates in the annual SuperComputing conference. Our booth showcases highlighted research on multiple display monitors. Our presence adds to the depth and diversity of the conference as a whole as we engage with the larger HPC community.
Attend SC25
We would like to encourage you to plan to attend the next SuperComputing conference: SC25 in St Louis, MO November 16-21, 2025.
Students are encouraged to look into the student volunteer program as the majority of the conference expenses are covered by SC.
HPC systems staff office hours
Virtual office hours, via Zoom, can be arranged on an as needed basis. We would, however, like you to first start by opening a ticket to describe the issue you are experiencing with the cluster. More often than not, issues can be resolved via a couple of exchanges of emails/tickets.
If there is an interest in the community, we can look into holding regular office hours. (Our previous attempt at doing this did not result in a lot of walk-ins; so pre-scheduled one-on-one sessions, as described above, would probably be best.)
Join the discussion list
The email list described below seems to have been deleted due to lack of activity. If there is interest, we can create a new Listserv list.
We've set up an email discussion list, HPCC-DISCUSS, for the HPC user community to be able to reach each other. Since the HPC system staff's expertise does not extend to various codes and science areas, this method may provide extra local assistance from your peer-group. To subscribe:
-
Via the web: go to https://listserv.umd.edu, click on Subscriber's Corner, show All Lists, and select and subscribe to hpcc-discuss
-
Via email: Send an email to listserv@umd.edu with the content
subscribe hpcc-discuss anonymous. (Then respond to the confirmation email.)
Software user groups
Many of our reserchers use the same software packages, similar research tools, and interoperable algorithms. We encourage those who have similar interests to collaborate via user groups designed to assist cross pollanation. Please let HPC systems staff know if you'd like to start such a user group.
Protein Folding
We've had an initial meeting of users of the AlphaFold software. If you'd like to join the mailing list to discuss AlphaFold and other protein folding software tools, please let us know.
Women in HPC
We would like to see a UMD Chapter of Women in High Performance Computing group. The UMD organizations need to be organized and run by the current students. If you are interested, we can facilitate the discussions.
