Overview
This workshop is targeted at new users of the University's High Performance Computing "Zaratan" cluster, especially those with limited or no HPC experience.
In order to allow for sufficient time to access the cluster and to test the presented material, in particular job submission, we offer two sessions of thie workshop:
- Session 1: using command-line interface (Unix/Linux shell) (July 29, 2025)
- Session 2: Using the Open OnDemand web portal (August 5, 2025)
Both workshop sessions introduce participants to the basics of high-perforance compute (HPC) at UMD, covering:
- general HPC concepts, terminology, etc.
- accessing the cluster
- accessing software installed on the cluster
- transferring files
- submitting jobs on the cluster
- optimizing job submission scripts
In session 1 (7/29/25) we will access the cluster using ssh (and PuTTY) and une a terminal (Unix/Linux shell) to work on the cluster.
In session 2 (8/25/2025) we will use the Open OnDemand web portal (portal.zaratan.umd.edu to access and work on the cluster.
The Open OnDemand web portal offers unexperienced users an efficient way to accomplish most practical tasks. Using a Unix shell interactively or running shell scripts allows for using the full breath of the Linux/Unix operating system. Several worked-out examples will be presented, these can be used as templates for similar projects.
Prerequisites
None. This is an introductory workshop and is targetted at new users of the cluster, so no previous knowledge of high performance computing nor Linux/Unix is assumed.
System Requirements
This is a bring-your-own-laptop event. Make sure that a terminal application (e.g. ssh or PuTTY) and UMD's GlobalProtect VPN is installed. A modern web browser (on Windows preferably Firefox) is required for use of the web portal.
Miscellaneous Details
You may register for one or both sessions.
The classroom provides 55 seats. While the official registration deadline is 27 July 2025, we are currently limiting this workshop to 55 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, and registration will close once the workshop is full.
Note
NOTE: DIT reserves the right to cancel the workshop for any reason with little notice.
