Deepthought Cluster

The Deepthought cluster is the first of the HPC clusters maintained by the Division of Information Technology as a general campus resource. It was named after the supercomputer from the science fiction comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
After serving the campus research and academic community for well over a decade it was retired in 2018 due to the cost of maintaining it as a reliable and viable cluster outpaced its value as a research tool.

Individual hardware components were replaced and upgraded through its lifetime, so that none of the original hardware remained when it was finally decommissioned. The following lists the variety of hardware on the cluster at the time of its retirement:

Description Number of nodes Processor Cores/node Mem/node (GiB) Mem/core /tmp size (GB) Interconnect
Nodes1 39 Woodcrest 2.0 GHz 4 4 1 35 GigE
Nodes2 88 Woodcrest 2.7 GHz 4 8 2 35 GigE
Nodes3 6 Clovertown 2.3 GHz 8 32 4 190 tGigE
Nodes4 16 Gainestown 2.3 GHz 8 24 3 100 GigE
Nodes5 6 Westmere 2.9 GHz 12 24 2 100 GigE
Nodes6 24 Westmere 2.9 GHz 12 48 4 100 GigE
Nodes7 18 SandyBridge 2.2 GHz 16 64 4 190 GigE
